About Velas

Velas is a small village in the northern most tip of Ratnagiri District, off the western coast of Maharashtra about 250 kms south of Mumbai and about 20kms south of Harihareshwar the Kashi of the West a major place of pilgrimage. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis.He was sachiva- a secretary in Peshawai in Pune.It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people of Velas and Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, Chiplun.

Velas which is famous for the Olive Ridley turtle.Every year Olive Ridley turtle population that visits the Velas beach and lays their eggs. After two months, the eggs hatch and hundreds of little turtles slowly crawl back to sea. To witness this unforgettable moment of a baby turtle coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by those baby steps

The velas is situated near the Bankot Bay. Shri Bhairi Rameshwar Temple, Shri Mahalakshmi Temple and a residence of Shri Nana Phadanvis are places to see in the village.
